This image is from a whole fresh paddle crab. Paddle crabs are sensitive to ground vibrations, but how they detect vibrations is not understood, as they do not have ‘ears’. MicroCT Imaging was undertaken to establish if sand grains located within the shell could be a possible mechanism for vibration detection.
A major advantage of MicroCT is being able to see the inside story of structural relationships, and it can reveal features without having to dissect samples.
