The Heart Within the Heart

This image shows a slice of a single piece of muscle, less than 1 mm across, from the inside of a human heart. The cells within this muscle were processed to make them fluorescent and visualise the structure. These muscle cells contract to make the heart beat, so we see that their function reflects the function of the organ they come from. Surprisingly, we see in this particular muscle that the cells also form a shape that mimics the organ they come from. Who knows, you may have a heart within your heart too!
