The Grape Breath
Fung Chan
The acinus is an essential unit of the lung and respiratory system responsible for gas exchange. Within each acinus are numerous alveoli, tiny air sacs, where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide occurs between the lung air and blood capillaries. Structurally, the acinus closely resembles a bunch of grapes where a respiratory bronchiole (stem) branches off into several alveolar units (grapes). This 3D model of a human lung acinus was created from a Micro-CT scan of a healthy lung tissue sample and has a volume of 5mm3.
